Today, May 1st, is May Day. In some countries, they celebrate spring. It is often a time for dancing and the flowers the good weather brings. Communist nations (both former and current) call it International Workers Day. In the United States, however, Loyalty Day is the first day of May. Loyalty Day is a day set aside to reaffirm our heritage of freedom. Something we take for granted. One of those things we don't notice until we need'em. May Day just might have more holidays than any other day of the year. Governments and religions all use this day to spread cheer. Mayday has another meaning, as well. It is used in times of distress. Boaters and pilots may call "Mayday!" three times, whenever they run into a mess. Judging from yesterday's school day, this latter meaning may be apropos. Your homework last night was your last chance to really show what you know, about calculating area. Did you do your best? While you do your Morning Work, I'll take a glance at that little test. I certainly hope you took your time and did things the right way. Because how you do will determine whether it's May Day or "Mayday!" |
