My tale begins on Thursday. It's actually quite weird. I was halfway through your Reading class, when I noticed you weren't here! Now, I admit, the room was quiet. But, frankly, to me it seemed you finally decided to cooperate and not wait for me to scream! When I asked "Are there any questions?" not one student spoke up. All was going smoothly, until I lost my coffee cup. Frantically, I asked for help. But no one would reply. And when I started looking, it hit me as to why. Where had all the students gone? Had they vanished into space? My whole class had disappeared! I looked all around this place! It didn't really take that long. There aren't many places you can hide. I looked all around the room, then I looked outside. There was no one outside, either. I needed help and I needed it bad. I had somehow lost 23 kids, and I'll bet SOME parents would be mad! I sheepishly went to the office. I cried "My students just . . . went away!" "Mr. Mac," they replied quite calmly, "today's a teacher work day." I exhaled a sigh of relief and slowly breathed in again. "But we're a little curious, how you didn't notice they were gone until 10!" I coughed and shrugged and stuttered, then it came to me in a flash! "It's just EVERY DAY, they're so well-behaved, doing their Morning Math." "They're quiet as little church mice, during Grammar Giggles, too." "My class is so reliable and disciplined, they know just what to do!" "They work so hard EVERY MORNING, doing what needs to be done, they are always quiet and studious. They never take a break and have fun." The noise you may have heard Thursday morning, came from the office staff. Because as soon as I said "quiet" and "disciplined," that's when they started to laugh!
