It seemed like a good idea, or it seemed so at the time.
My students would begin their day, with a little rhyme.
An ice breaker. A bell ringer. A silly start to their day.
And for almost twenty years, each class started that way.

"Almost" I say, because there were some days that I missed.
There was testing. Or I was tired. Or grumpy. Or pi... upset.
And in Middle School Robotics, the poems didn't succeed.
There were robots to build! They couldn't be bothered to read!

Now I'm retired, but of course, can't just throw them away.
(still have some "mrmaconline" swag left too, by the way.)
They're all here in this archive, preserved for posterity.
Available for reading and remembering by ... probably just me.

Prescient?

My Kindergarten report card;
a long, LONG time ago.
Predicting one's future is REALLY hard.
How could Mrs. Faith know?

Even though I was only four,
Mrs. Faith could already tell.
Not just poems, there's even more!
Another note: "Kevin relaxes quite well!"

First Day

Welcome to Mr. Mac's Class!

Summer's over. School again.
Grab a pencil. Borrow a pen.
Summer's over. Now you're here.
Funny. I don't hear a cheer.

Is it that you would rather be
on vacation than in school with me?
Why in the world would you think like that?
Everyone knows school's where it's at.

Home is boring with nothing to do.
Here at school, there’s work for you!
Books to read. Answers to write.
Work you will take home tonight!

You’re sitting in this room on a nice, hard plastic chair,
Not some boring beach with a sea breeze in your hair.
You don’t have to play baseball or walk in the park.
No more having to stay up after dark!

I know Summer Vacation is the time all kids hate.
And that's why they look forward to this very date.
You made it through that hard time. You are commended.
You'll be delighted to know that your nightmare's now ended.

Everyone is now happy. Why shouldn't you be?
Instead of being on vacation, you're here. With me.
It’s the first day of school! Give Mr. Mac a big "Hi!"
(He's the grumpy, old man with the sleep in his eyes.)
